Sennheiser HD 598Cs 🎧 Review – Best Budget Headphones

Overview

I was looking for an upgrade over my open back headphones (Beyerdynamic DTX 910) to a closed one and after a lot of research, I landed up on Sennheiser HD 598Cs.

I love how open back headphones sound, but, they lack Noise Cancellation. I can’t really use these to ignore irrelevant sound(&people), Right? That’s how I made my mind to buy a closed back one. Good decision, I believe.

In The Box

The box contains 3 things

1 Sennheiser HD 598 Cs (obviously) and,
2 Detachable Cables : A 3.5 mm to 2.5mm cable and one 6.35mm to 2.5mm cable for professional audio devices.

The 3.5mm to 2.5mm cable has a mic and play/pause button primarily made keeping smartphone usage in the mind.

Build Quality

Though Sennheiser HD 598 Cs is made of plastic, it’s quality grade lies in the premium quality spectrum for sure. It’s sturdy and durable enough to last for a long time.

It has a headband which is made of some leather-like material on the top and the part facing the head is made of foam, covered with some soft leatherette material.

The earpads are big and made of some fine cloth with foam inside it to support it. These are way too comfortable with NO FATIGUE at all. You can wear these for hours and you’ll not even feel a bit of pain in the ears, no sweat, nothing!

The earpads can be extended to ’18 units’ from each side. This makes sure that it fits to people with big heads and big ears as well!

Sound Quality

Sound signature of Sennheiser HD 598Cs sounds similar to Audio-Technica MSR7 and Beyerdynamic DT 770

Even though it’s a Closed Back headphone, it has a really wide soundstage.

The sound is natural and overall flat in nature which reflects the similarity with other Sennheiser headphones like HD600.

These work great with a smartphone as it has an Impedance of just 23 Ohms (Ω). (Though buying a DAC would definitely improve the experience to a good extent.)

Highs

These pair of headphones have really good highs.

You can hear a Cymbal clearly.
And the sound of the Cymbal doesn’t get lost in the midway, it’s just perfect, stays for the right amount of time span making the song sound just the way it was made!

Mids and Vocals

Mids of HD598 Cs are sharp and striking, sharper than most headphones in the budget spectrum of $100-200.

Vocals are clear and really good.

You can hear Adele rolling in the deep with that shrill voice piercing into your ears.

Lows

Lows on these headphones are really good as they feel unaltered.

You can hear the low resonant thumps of the bass guitar kicking in after each strum on that Les Paul Bass guitar!

Bass

Let’s talk about the thing Bassheads were looking in the whole review.

If you’ve a taste of something like ATH M50X then, unfortunately, these pair of headphones aren’t for you.
These headphones are used in professional studios for a reason, HD598 Cs don’t have an altered bass algorithm like ATH M50X, instead, these have bass similar to what open back headphones generally have, that is, Flat and natural.

Natural bass is perfect for someone who has an audio taste like mine – I prefer the device alters the sound to exactly 0 percent.

Instruments

Let’s not forget these?

Each and every single Instrument sounds crystal clear with no altered sound, making them sound as natural as they should sound.

Looks

For those of you who care about how your headphone look, I can assure you these headphones have a premium look.

The design is adopted from the HD598 and I personally find these good looking.

Cons

I’ve been using these headphones for over 6 months now and I’ve been able to find only a few cons till now.

Portability

I don’t even know what Sennheiser was thinking while making these. A Consumer market oriented headphone which costs around $150 is not portable at all. WHAT?

Considering it’s a HD5xx series headphone, they are following the typical portability as the older headphones did.

Wired, But Why? (Not really a con though)

Audiophiles can scroll down this part.

But this is one question that might come into your head. Why not make it a Wireless headphone? It would’ve just made these headphones perfect.

[Just in case if you don’t know, wired headphones have a better sound quality than wireless ones]

Use of Plastic

This is a Con that I can overlook as I can ‘somehow’ trade-off Sound Quality for Plastic Build.

But I would’ve loved use of aluminium here and there in the headphones.

Verdict

Sennheiser HD598 Cs are a pair of headphones that just doesn’t fit the price bracket.

Don’t get me wrong, these could’ve been priced above $250, the Sound Quality is perfect, bass is natural. Let’s not forget the Highs, Mids and Lows are just perfect.
Instruments sound exactly how they should be.

Even though these headphones were mainly made for Consumer market, the above reasons make the HD598 Cs a really good pair of headphones for Sound Monitoring and Music Creation as well.

In my opinion these headphones are the best in the budget (minus) the foldability!
